Two artworks were commissioned by Sergei Tchoban of the architectural offices of NPS Tchoban Voss based in Berlin, Germany. His firm had been working in Berlin for about 20 years, and wanted to commemorate the best of their buildings by having a select group of […]
Constructing Emotion
Another inspiration from Robert Bruno. This was an image I captured very early in his journey creating the steel house. The contrast of the organic curved forms and the industrial nature of the crane he constructed was just great.
Museum fur Architekturzeichnung
Serendipity: I started doing these drawings many years ago as a creative outlet that didn’t deal with the realities that my architecture has to. Just the expression of ideas about how buildings are situated in the environment, and how they are seen, or can be […]
Balboa Park
This is a great structure in the park in San Diego. The view took a long time to capture with the right sun angles, and is no longer possible to see it this way due to new construction surrounding this tower. The balance of blank stucco […]
Two Domes
In downtown San Diego, if you stand at just the right spot, you can see the second dome through the first one. This view is unique, and has a surreal quality. Mike Lederle more than earned this one for all his great work designing the […]
Portal
This image was captured in 1976+/- at Ransom Canyon in Texas. This is the entrance to Robert Bruno’s steel house (check out robertbruno.com). While unfinished for over 30 years, this structure’s particular state of incompletion was really beautiful. I did take a few liberties with what […]
Olathe Community Center
I was asked to create this piece by the Leopold Gallery for a new building. The idea was to capture the building while it was being constructed. I thought the way the concrete formwork and other elements were composed in this particular view formed a […]
Live-Work Apartment for the Family of Philip IV
This one is kind of out there. When in Barcelona at the Miro Museum, we saw an exhibition of artists that had created their version of Velasquez’ classic painting, Las Meninas. Picasso and Dali also had their take on this painting, as well as others. There […]
Staircase
This is an element on the backside of Horton Plaza. A very utilitarian and “undersigned” element. The geometry and way sunlight defined the shape and created shadow patterns resulted in a very sculptural composition .
San Diego Bank & Trust
When we lived in San Diego, I spent many hours walking the downtown area capturing both entire buildings as well as parts of buildings that made strong statements. This arched entrance was edited from a larger building façade. But the detailing and depth of this composition were […]
4900 Main
This was a building I designed for a site in Kansas City, that wasn’t realized. The main idea is the “Skydeck”, set atop a rigid geometric grid. The grid is intended to be a simple backdrop, with a subtle shift at each floor.
Europcar
This building is all about the way it presents geometry to the streetscape. The parking structure forms a plinth base for the building tower that vanishes into the night sky. I saw the billboard as a blank slate to capture the viewer’s reaction to the façade.
