This one is kind of out there. When in Barcelona at the Miro Museum, we saw an exhibition of artists that had created their version of Velasquez’ classic painting, Las Meninas. Picasso and Dali also had their take on this painting, as well as others. There have also been many academic studies of this composition, analyzing the geometry, angles and alignments of the various characters, the room, and the doorway. So at the same time I’m thinking about drawing the bold and classic “façade” of the ISS, as it had been on my mind as architectural subject matter. It is quite a structure and place. Through the placement of the various characters that make up his painting, Velasquez captured the goings-on within that royal family. I started thinking about how we never hear anything about the personal dynamics that must go on inside the ISS, so added the space people using the same composition.
